I am always on the hunt especially on the internet for anything to give as small gifts when I sell my hair bows. I have thought about ink pens and pencils. They are kind of expensive.

I have though about some lapel pins, button pins, and bottlecap pins, but im not sure that would go over as well.

I have looked at some cute magnets to put on the back of my business cards , but I have not found an economical place to find them yet.

If anyone has any ideas or comments they would be greatly appreciated!

When my youngest daughter left for college this past fall, her father and I did our best to prepare her for life on her own. Obviously she has us as a safety net, but she’s living self-sufficiently, for all intents and purposes. We set her up in her new apartment with lots of new furnishings and her own set of pots and pans and went on our way. We pay her rentand all utilities to allow her to focus on school, and the coolest thing ever happened the other day. Evidently she was talking to some friends and one mentioned that in Texas, where they attend school, each resident has the ability to select his or her energy provider! It’s one of the few states that offers that ability; each person can choose the provider that offers the best rates. My daughter had us call to make a change to a more affordable provider, and we’re saving money every month. I love that she’s only been on her own for a few months and she already understands the value of saving some money on something like a utility bill! I think we’ve taught her pretty well. January 24, 2012, NEW YORK—The Hungarian folk hero Attila Ambrus, aka the “Whiskey Robber,” whose story galvanized a nation and inspired an award-winning book, six songs, an audio cabaret, a German theater production, an international fan base and two competing film projects (including one from Johnny Depp) will be released from prison on January 31, 2012. He is 44 years old and has been behind bars for 12 years.

Attila became a people’s hero by robbing state-owned banks and post offices in what became a serialized protest of the corruption of the political and banking systems during Eastern Europe’s transition from communism to capitalism. His release comes at a time when social movements such as Occupy Wall Street have taken on the same issues. As poignantly noted by the Hungarian media, “Can anyone regard the deeds of the Whiskey Robber as a crime? What about the everyday ‘business’ of the so-called elite….Attila Ambrus had the courage to make an attack against this unjust system…He didn’t rob a bank. He just performed a peculiar redistribution of the wealth, which differed from the elites only in its method.” At the time of his arrest, polls showed 90 percent of his countrymen supported him.

Hailing from Transylvania, Attila escaped into Hungary underneath a train just before the fall of communism in 1988. He worked as a gravedigger, an animal pelt smuggler, a zamboni driver for Hungary’s biggest pro hockey team–and ultimately its goaltender (becoming arguably the worst goalie ever to play pro hockey, once giving up 23 goals in a single game.) Failing to find a way to make a living and frustrated by the rampant corruption in nascent capitalist Hungary, he bought a wig and fake gun and, on the January day in 1994 that President Clinton was inaugurated, he was on his way to becoming “one of the most endearing figures in the annals of bad behavior.” Handing flowers to tellers and mailing wine to hapless investigators, he carried off 29 heists over 7 years, never hurting anyone, and earning the moniker “Whiskey Robber,” because witnesses always spotted him downing a shot before stepping into the banks.

Julian Rubinstein, author of the award-winning Ballad of the Whiskey Robber (Little, Brown) and producer of the digital audio cabaret recording (available on iTunes and elsewhere), has remained in touch with Attila over the years and has visited him 14 times in the prison in Hungary.
